Moving towards the old port, the imposing three-aisled Metropolitan Church will catch your eye. It was built on the site of an older church of Theotokos from the 14th century, which during the Turkish rule was turned into a soap factory and then the modern church was rebuilt. The construction was completed in 1860 and it has been identified with the fate, life and history of the city. Many travelers visit the temple to admire the rich fresco decoration by Cretan artists and learn more about its history and legend.
