Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania (San Salvatore)
OVERVIEW

Inside of the Catholic church of San Salvatore’s monastery, a 15th century monument, the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania is housed. All exhibits are grouped into sections and they clearly capture the historical and artistic development of the westernmost prefecture of Crete. Travel through the early Christian and Byzantine years to the Ottoman Empire via mosaics, wall paintings, architectural sculptures, ceramics and coins. It is about a tribute to the artistic side of Chania’s Regional Unity. San Salvatore’s church is built on the west side of the fortress next to the bastion of the same name while on the south side of the monument, the covered tunnel where the monks’ cells used to be, is preserved.
