Private Tour: Ag. Irini
Starting from your pickup point in Chania we head to the village of Agia Irini. Upon our arrival in the village you can have some coffee before starting our hike that will last about 3-4 hours. At the end of the gorge, the bus will be waiting for us to board to Sougia, where there will be free time for lunch and swimming. We board again for our return to your hotel or villa.
After picking you up from your hotel or villa we reach the Ag. Irini gorge which is located on the western side of the White Mountains and is part of the European path E4. Its length is 7km and it has been designated as a Wildlife Sanctuary as it is a refuge for many species of fauna. It has an impressive and rich forest vegetation with many types of trees, shrubs and aromatic plants. It has also a very important historical and cultural value. During the Ottoman period the insurgents had their hideouts in the location ‘Polla Spitakia’ and in 1866 about 1000 women and children escaped from the Ottomans through the trails of the gorge.
Afterwards we head to the village of Sougia, a quiet and ideal destination for getaways and swimming. The beach has crystal clear and deep waters and has been a preferable destination of hippies in the 70s. The beach and the port of Sougia are located in the ancient city of Siia, that means ‘the place of pigs’. Today, only a few ruins survive, mainly from the Roman period. Modern Sougia is a getaway destination for both tourists and locals.
