Private Tour: Samaria Gorge
Starting from your pickup point in Chania we head to Chora Sfakion. After our arrival we will board the boat to Agia Roumeli, where there will be free time for lunch and swimming till the afternoon. If you wish, you can also walk in reverse to ‘Portes’ point inside the gorge (about 1 hour on easy terrain). In the afternoon we will board the boat back to Chora Sfakion for our return to your hotel or villa.
After picking you up from your hotel or villa we head to the small, picturesque village of Agia Roumeli which can be reached either by hiking through the gorge or by boat from the nearby beaches. The village’s beaches are wide and full of taverns serving local, traditional delicacies. The village is built on the ruins of an ancient city and you can still see some castle ruins.
From the village, you can cross a part of the gorge from the reverse side and admire the wild natural beauty. The Samaria Gorge belongs to Europe’s most famous hiking gorges. Its length is 15km and the descent takes about 5-7 hours from Omalos to Agia Roumeli. It is part of the European path E4 and was created by the river that flows between the main body of the White Mountains and Mount Volakias. Inside the gorge you will see the deserted Samaria village that was abandoned in 1962. The trail starts from Xyloskalo, which leads you to an unforgettable scenery with deep ravines, springs with waters, rich flora and fauna with 450 species of plants and the famous kri kri goats.
