After picking you up from your hotel or villa we start our tour to the archaeological site of Phaistos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete. The Minoan Palace was developed until prehistoric times, until the 1st century BC. It is the second largest palace center, after the palace of Knossos, and has a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Today, the buildings that can be visited belong to the period 1700-4150 BC and haven’t been restored. The main features of Minoan architecture are recognized in the palace and are divided into wings of the royal apartments, the banquet hall, the central courtyard and many more. The famous Phaistos Disc though, is exhibited in the Museum of Heraklion.
We continue our route to Matala, one of the most popular and touristic destinations and certainly the most famous beach of southern Heraklion. It is known for the carved caves but also for the hippies who used to gather there in the 70s. The beach has fine sand, crystal clear deep water and it’s very well organized with umbrellas courts, snack bars, water sports, taverns and bars. The most famous attractions of the area are the carved caves, located north of the beach, that were carved thousands of years ago and used to be tombs during the Roman and Christian periods. They used to be a shelter for the hippies as well, who created unforgettable moments. To this day, the caves can be visited as an archaeological site.
